Hermanus

Hermanus

Hermanus is best-known for its whales. It is one of the best places on the coast to see these amazing mammals, mainly because they love the safe waters here and the coastal paths around the town offer so many fantastic viewing points.

They say this is probably the best land based whale watching destination in the world and if this is the reason for your trip, the best time to visit is late September and October.

Thousands of visitors flock to the area at this time of the year as the Southern Right whales return to the waters of  Walker Bay with their young, celebrating the arrival of Spring and the town hosts its annual Whale Festival to celebrate the occasion.

But it is more likely that you will be here in the summer months, when there is still plenty to do and lots to see. We suggest you stay in or around Hermanus for a couple of days to use as a base while you head out to some of the other places in the area, such as Geenanendal, Greyton.  Don’t forget to take in the Walker Bay nature reserve, which stretches all the way from Hermanus to Gaansbai
